Meet our Personal Trainers 

Wellness Center personal trainers provide members the opportunity to train under skilled professionals.

Our accredited personal trainers at the Wellness Center have extensive backgrounds in health promotion and exercise science. Our personal trainers are nationally certified through accredited fitness organizations such as the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Personal Trainers at the Wellness Center


Greg Cox portrait 800pxGreg Cox is the Fitness Supervisor and a certified strength and conditioning specialist and CrossFit Level 1 coach. He has a bachelor's degree in exercise science from East Carolina University and a master's degree in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University. He also holds certifications in Olympic weightlifting, mobility and Spin. He has worked as a fitness professional in a variety of settings for over 19 years, including 18 years at The Wellness Center.

In his free time Greg enjoys weight lifting, running, biking and CrossFit. Greg enjoys working with individuals one-on-one and coaching CrossFit classes. He specializes in strength and conditioning, fat loss and cardiovascular conditioning.

Michael Darling portrait 800pxMichael Darling has 14 years of experience working in the fitness industry. Currently, he is serving as a Fitness Instructor at Appalachian Regional Healthcare System's Wellness Center in Boone, NC. There, he enjoys instructing a diverse population in reaching their fitness goals. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning from Appalachian State University, a Master's Degree in Health Studies from the University of Alabama, as well as being certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and NSCA Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT). 

He also supervises student teachers as they educate college students in a weight training practicum course at Appalachian State University.

Katie Greene portrait 800pxKatie Greene has been a personal trainer at the Wellness Center since 2010 after she graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Health Promotion and Exercise Science. She is CSCS certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and will graduate with a Master's in Health Studies from the University of Alabama in 2014. Along with working as personal trainer, she is also the administrative coordinator of THRIVE, a clinical program designed for individuals with cardiopulmonary disease.

"When it comes to personal training, I believe that every client has different needs and goals and as a trainer it is my job to help find the right balance of strength training, aerobic training, and nutrition to maximize results. There is no magic pill or magic wand – it takes hard work and a lifetime of dedication. My own workouts consist of heavy lifting and interval training." She also loves hiking with her two dogs, Tater and Goose!

Martin Hubner portrait 800pxMartin Hubner is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) specializing in adolescent and adult strength training. He is a 2009 graduate (BA) from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a degree in Physical Education and Health, and a 2011 graduate (MS) from Appalachian State University with a degree in Exercise Science. His experience includes military, specifically Marines, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athletes, NCAA D1 soccer players and swimmers, and middle/high school football, basketball, baseball, and golf.

Prior to his college education, Martin served active duty in the US Marine Corps and served as the Physical Training (PT) instructor for his platoon of approximately 60 Marines. Currently he holds certifications from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), the American College of Sports Medicine (Health Fitness Specialist), and USA Weightlifting (USAW L-1). He has developed the Youth Strength & Conditioning Program at the Wellness Center and serves as its primary coach where he teaches various strength training techniques and programs for 12-17 year olds.

Tony Compagnone portrait 800pxTony Compagnone has been at the wellness center since 2015 with the Thrive program. He comes to us via Naples, Florida. He was a local gym owner for 7 years, personal trainer for 28 years and has lead a healthy lifestyle all his life. His training now consists primarily of bodybuilding exercises as he competes yearly. His education from Florida State University yielded a Bachelors in Exercise Science and a Bachelors in Nutrition Science, He is a Health Fitness Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer from the ACSM, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the NSCA and is currently preparing for the Clinical Exercise Specialist exam. He is available for personal training with individuals or group training as well.

Dustin Oliver portrait 800pxDustin Oliver is a recent graduate of Appalachian State University with a BS in Exercise Science. Before attending Appalachian State University, he played college football for North Carolina Wesleyan. His fitness experience includes working for the Wellness Center, Dynamic Fitness and Performance, Deer Valley Racquet Club, as well as working with the North Carolina Wesleyan football strength and condition staff. Dustin is currently preparing for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam.

“I am passionate about what I do because it gives me the opportunity to use my knowledge to give back, and help other people around me achieve their goals. At the end of the day it is not about what you can do for yourself, but what you can do for others. I enjoy helping others realize they are capable of so much more than what they believe they are.”

 

 


 

Madison Burris portrait 125pxMadison Burris enjoys assisting, and motivating individuals to reach and excel past their fitness and health goals. Since graduating high school, Madison has held several internships in health related fields, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science along with minors in Chemistry and Psychology from Appalachian State University in 2016.

She joined our staff at the Paul H. Broyhill Wellness Center in May 2016, after first working as an intern for the Wellness Center and Rehabilitation Center. She is also certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as an Exercise Physiologist (EP-C). Madison enjoys personal training while also teaching several of the classes offered here at the facility. In her free time, Madison enjoys hiking, running, playing soccer, and spending time with her friends and family.
