Meet our Personal Trainers 

Wellness Center personal trainers provide members the opportunity to train under skilled professionals.

Our accredited personal trainers at the Wellness Center have extensive backgrounds in health promotion and exercise science. Our personal trainers are nationally certified through accredited fitness organizations such as the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Personal Trainers at the Wellness Center

krisHartley1Kris Hartley is the Fitness and Clinical Programs Manager and a certified clinical exercise specialist and certified strength and conditioning specialist with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University. His fitness experience includes working for the Wellness Center for six years and being the North Carolina State Director for the National Strength and Conditioning Association from August 2010-April 2013.

His personal interest includes football, baseball, being outdoors and lifting weights. Kris enjoys working with and creating individual and group programs for clients of all ages. He specializes in disease management, weight loss while promoting increased mobility, functional strength, and muscular and cardiovascular endurance.

gregCox1Greg Cox is the Head Fitness Instructor and a certified strength and conditioning specialist and CrossFit Level 1 coach. He has a bachelor's degree in exercise science from East Carolina University and a master's degree in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University. He also holds certifications in Olympic weightlifting, mobility and Spin. He has worked as a fitness professional in a variety of settings for over 15 years, including 12 years at The Wellness Center.

In his free time Greg enjoys weight lifting, running, biking and CrossFit. Greg enjoys working with individuals one-on-one and coaching CrossFit classes. He specializes in strength and conditioning, fat loss and cardiovascular conditioning.

michaelDarling1Michael Darling has 14 years of experience working in the fitness industry. Currently, he is serving as a Fitness Instructor at Appalachian Regional Healthcare System's Wellness Center in Boone, NC. There, he enjoys instructing a diverse population in reaching their fitness goals. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning from Appalachian State University, a Master's Degree in Health Studies from the University of Alabama, as well as being certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and NSCA Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT). 

He also supervises student teachers as they educate college students in a weight training practicum course at Appalachian State University.

katieGreene1Katie Greene has been a personal trainer at the Wellness Center since 2010 after she graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Health Promotion and Exercise Science. She is CSCS certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and will graduate with a Master's in Health Studies from the University of Alabama in 2014. Along with working as personal trainer, she is also the administrative coordinator of THRIVE, a clinical program designed for individuals with cardiopulmonary disease.

"When it comes to personal training, I believe that every client has different needs and goals and as a trainer it is my job to help find the right balance of strength training, aerobic training, and nutrition to maximize results. There is no magic pill or magic wand – it takes hard work and a lifetime of dedication. My own workouts consist of heavy lifting and interval training." She also loves hiking with her two dogs, Tater and Goose!

martinHubner1Martin Hubner is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) specializing in adolescent and adult strength training. He is a 2009 graduate (BA) from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a degree in Physical Education and Health, and a 2011 graduate (MS) from Appalachian State University with a degree in Exercise Science. His experience includes military, specifically Marines, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athletes, NCAA D1 soccer players and swimmers, and middle/high school football, basketball, baseball, and golf.

Prior to his college education, Martin served active duty in the US Marine Corps and served as the Physical Training (PT) instructor for his platoon of approximately 60 Marines. Currently he holds certifications from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), the American College of Sports Medicine (Health Fitness Specialist), and USA Weightlifting (USAW L-1). He has developed the Youth Strength & Conditioning Program at the Wellness Center and serves as its primary coach where he teaches various strength training techniques and programs for 12-17 year olds.

kendallConner1Kendall Conner is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a BS in Exercise Science and a minor in Health Promotion. She is ACSM CPT certified and has earned her CrossFit L1.

Kendall enjoys the classes at CrossFit Boone, and has recently begun competing in area Crossfit competitions. As a personal trainer, she enjoys helping people achieve their goals and expand their fitness possibilities. In her free time, Kendall enjoys fly fishing, hiking, and taking her puppy to the Greenway.

jacoGerbrands1Jaco Gerbrands is a graduate from Appalachian State University. He completed his Masters Degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis on Strength and Conditioning. While studying in the US, Jaco played college tennis in California and Colorado. Jaco is originally from South Africa and moved to Boone with his wife, Alexa to pursue graduate school.

He specializes in training high school/collegiate athletes and is currently working with the high school strength and conditioning program at the wellness center. Jaco is excited to meet new people and create programs that will benefit individuals at their fitness level. He is passionate about getting people stronger and helping them reach their personal goals, whether it be muscle endurance, losing weight or teaching them the fundamentals of strength training.

Seth CoxSeth Cox is from Ashe County, NC and graduated high school in 2010. He attended Appalachian State University from 2010-2014 where he majored in Health Promotion with a minor in Exercise Science. He recently obtained USAW Level 1 coaching certification. During his last semester at Appalachian, he interned with Travis Mash or Mash Elite Performance and with Muscle Driver USA. This internship accelerated his knowledge of strength and conditioning particularly in Olympic Weightlifting.

Seth’s hobbies include training and competing in Olympic Weightlifting. He also enjoys studying and teaching any other lifting disciplines such as power lifting or strongman. Seth is seeking to complete his CSCS certification in the near future.

 

 


Tony-small

Tony Compagnone has been at the wellness center since 2015 with the Thrive program. He comes to us via Naples, Florida. He was a local gym owner for 7 years, personal trainer for 28 years and has lead a healthy lifestyle all his life. His training now consists primarily of bodybuilding exercises as he competes yearly. His education from Florida State University yielded a Bachelors in Exercise Science and a Bachelors in Nutrition Science, He is a Health Fitness Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer from the ACSM, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the NSCA and is currently preparing for the Clinical Exercise Specialist exam. He is available for personal training with individuals or group training as well.

DustinO

Dustin Oliver is a recent graduate of Appalachian State University with a BS in Exercise Science. Before attending Appalachian State University, he played college football for North Carolina Wesleyan. His fitness experience includes working for the Wellness Center, Dynamic Fitness and Performance, Deer Valley Racquet Club, as well as working with the North Carolina Wesleyan football strength and condition staff. Dustin is currently preparing for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam.
