Learn strategies and tips to prevent and manage diabetes with our 5 week class! 

Do you have diabetes or prediabetes? Are you caring for a family member with diabetes? Does diabetes run in your family’s health history?
Join us at the Paul H. Broyhill Wellness Center for a 5-week educational course and learn about strategies to prevent and manage diabetes.

Class Schedule

Week 1: Introduction - Thursday, July 7th, 5:30pm

Defining diabetes, development of diabetes, impacts on life/health

Week 2: Self-Management - Thursday, July 14th, 5:30pm

Testing blood sugar and target goals, managing activity and nutrition, medications and compliance, skin care

Week 3: Physical Activity - Thursday, July 21th, 5:30pm

Defining physical activity and recommendations, impacts of physical activity on diabetes, exercise demonstrations and participation

Week 4: Nutrition - Thursday, July 28th, 5:30pm

Nutrients that impact diabetes, balancing meals/snacks and portioning, tracking intake

Week 5: Cooking with Diabetes - Thursday, August 4th, 5:30pm

Tips/tricks, food exchanges, snack choices, food samples

How Do I Sign-Up

Call to schedule at 828.266.1060. Payment can be submitted at the Wellness Center front desk or over the phone. Deadline for sign-up and payment is 7/1/2022.

My name is Matthew Wilhelm and I am the Registered Dietitian at the Wellness Center. I am a graduate of Appalachian State University where I was awarded degrees in Health Promotion and Nutrition and Foods with a concentration in dietetics. I furthered my education and experience through the Dietetic Internship at UNC-Greensboro. My career focus has been primarily in weight management and diabetes management but, I enjoy all areas of nutrition. I believe nutrition plays a major role in every aspect of health and I hope to improve health outcomes in the High Country region. My favorite fruit is cantaloupe and my favorite vegetable is broccoli. My enjoyments in life are spending time with my family, hiking, traveling, golfing, and fly-fishing.
